This technique is thousands of years old and can be traced to early civilisations in Africa and Middle East. However, it is in Indonesia that this art form was perfected and popularised. The art of Batik has since spread to the rest of the Indonesian archipelago and the Malay Peninsula. Both Indonesia and Malaysia are now centers of Batik production. Batik is an artistic expression, reflecting the cultures of Indonesian and Malaysia. Of course, today with the influence of haute couture, Batik is now available in many forms.
