Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is now widely accepted as an alternative to western medicine for many ailments... even in the West. However, while most western over-the-counter medicines are manufactured by reputable pharmaceutical companies, TCM comes from various sources in China and other countries, many lacking in published standards. This is obviously a cause for concern by discerning customers. Traditionally, TCM is prescribed by a TCM practitioner, who also runs a retail outlet. However, with its popularity, TCM is now available at many Chinese medical stores all over Singapore, and even in major shopping malls.
Singapore has a very strict Health Science Authority which oversees the imports of all substances claiming medicinal and curative properties. This lends some assurance to the fact that TCM medicine in Singapore is safe. Furthermore, there are also several colleges and governing bodies of TCM located in Singapore, lending credence to the standards of TCM in Singapore.
Many retailers of TCM can be found in the China Town area in Singapore, while several retailers have shops in major shopping malls.
