Batik refers to fabric that has gone through the process of dyeing using dye-resistant substance, traditionally wax or paraffin, which prevents color absorption thus creating patterns on fabric. This technique is thousands of years old and can be traced to early civilisations in Africa and Middle East. However, it is in Indonesia that this art form was perfected and popularised. The art of Batik has since spread to the rest of the Indonesian archipelago and the Malay Peninsula. Both Indonesia and Malaysia are now centers of Batik production. Batik is an artistic expression, reflecting the cultures of Indonesian and Malaysia. Of course, today with the influence of haute couture, Batik is now available in many forms.
Kampong Glam and Arab Street is the Malay Muslim and Arab heritage area in Singapore. Batik which is synonymous with Indonesian-Malay culture can be found in a wide variety - from traditional, religious to haute couture. Shops can be found along the narrow streets in a bazaar like atmosphere. Here you can compare designs and fashion. Batik fabric can be bought by the metres or in read-to-wear shirts, dresses and tops. Many shops can also arrange for tailoring when requested or point you to a nearby tailor.
Like at any bazaar, bargaining is the norm.
